Who Provides Fire Protection in Hulpverleningszone Zuid-Oost
Since 2015, Belgian fire services are organized in rescue zones (hulpverleningszones) run by their member municipalities. Zuid-Oost covers seven in the Dender region:
- Aalst — the largest city, with posts in Aalst and Moorsel
- Ninove, Geraardsbergen, Denderleeuw, Haaltert, Lede and Erpe-Mere
The zone shrank on January 1, 2025: Laarne and Wetteren moved to Brandweerzone Centrum, Wichelen to Brandweerzone Oost and Lierde to Brandweerzone Vlaamse Ardennen, leaving seven municipalities and seven posts.
Aalst has a career fire corps (beroepsbrandweer) that can back up the other posts, which rely mainly on volunteers (vrijwilligers). Volunteers must live within 5 km of their post or reach it within 10 minutes of the alarm. The zone also runs ambulances; an extra ambulance standby point opened in Lede on April 1, 2025. The zone does not publish a career/volunteer split.

Estimated Response Time
Seven posts share about 338 km², so the average distance to the nearest post is roughly 3.9 km (2.4 mi). With about 730 residents per km² the zone is suburban. Aalst's career crews use the career column of our baseline table; the volunteer posts use the volunteer column, because crews must first reach their post.
| Radius | Aalst (career) | Volunteer posts |
|---|---|---|
| ≤ 2.4 km | 4–6 min | 8–12 min |
| 2.4–4.8 km | 6–8 min | 10–14 min |
| 4.8–9.7 km | 8–11 min | 12–18 min |
| > 9.7 km | 11+ min | 18+ min |
Typical expectation: about 6–8 minutes in central Aalst and about 10–14 minutes elsewhere. The zone does not publish measured arrival times; in 2024 unions warned that a structural staff shortage often left pumpers below the legal crew of six.
Estimated Fire Control Time
| Fire size | Example | Indicative time |
|---|---|---|
| Small | Grass patch, dumpster, small vehicle | 5–20 min |
| Medium | Room-and-contents, car fully involved | 15–45 min |
| Large | Whole house, commercial unit | 45–120 min |
| Major | Multi-alarm, industrial, large woodland fire | 2–12+ hours |
The zone mixes dense town centers along the Dender (Aalst, Ninove, Geraardsbergen), apartment blocks, industrial estates and farmland. The zone names storm damage, industrial fires, high-rise incidents and rescues at height as the main jobs for its new 44 m aerial platform. Large fires draw crews from several posts, with Aalst's career corps as backup.

Ratings & Accreditation
Belgium has no public fire-protection rating comparable to the US ISO classification. Not applicable.
Outdoor burning: Flemish environmental rules ban burning any waste in the open air, garden waste included. The Flemish Environment Agency lists only narrow exceptions, such as campfires with dry untreated wood and folklore fires with written municipal permission; drought bans can restrict even these. Compost garden waste or take it to a recyclagepark, and ask your municipality before lighting any outdoor fire.
