Who Provides Fire Protection in Brandweerzone Oost-Limburg
Since 2015, Belgian fire services are organized in rescue zones (hulpverleningszones) run by their member municipalities. The federal list of rescue zones (April 2026) names 13 members of BWOL:
- Genk area: Genk, Houthalen-Helchteren, Zutendaal, As and Oudsbergen
- Meuse valley: Kinrooi, Maaseik, Dilsen-Stokkem, Maasmechelen and Lanaken
- South: Bilzen-Hoeselt, Riemst and Voeren
Bilzen and Hoeselt merged on January 1, 2025, which cut the zone from 14 to 13 municipalities. Their two fire posts are being combined in one new station in Bilzen-Hoeselt, a €5.9 million building whose first stone was laid in May 2024.
In 2024 the zone employed on average 501 people: 97 career firefighters (beroepsbrandweerlieden), 293 volunteer firefighters (vrijwilligers), 20 civilian staff and 91 volunteer ambulance crew and nurses. Dial 112 and the emergency center alerts the nearest crews.

Posts have no separate phone numbers. Dial 112 for emergencies.
Estimated Response Time
Seven posts share about 884 km², so the average distance to the nearest post is roughly 6.3 km (3.9 mi). With about 370 residents per km² and crews that mix career and volunteer firefighters, the zone uses the suburban/combination column of our baseline table. Helchteren, Lanaken and Voeren get the volunteer column, because volunteers must first reach the post. The zone does not publish an average arrival time.
| Radius | Mixed posts | Volunteer posts |
|---|---|---|
| ≤ 2.4 km | 5–8 min | 8–12 min |
| 2.4–4.8 km | 7–10 min | 10–14 min |
| 4.8–9.7 km | 9–13 min | 12–18 min |
| > 9.7 km | 13+ min | 18+ min |
Typical expectation: about 9–13 minutes for most addresses near Genk, Maaseik, Maasmechelen and Bilzen-Hoeselt; about 12–18 minutes in villages served by the volunteer posts, such as the hills of Voeren, which is cut off from the rest of the zone by the Netherlands and Liège Province.
Estimated Fire Control Time
| Fire size | Example | Indicative time |
|---|---|---|
| Small | Grass patch, dumpster, small vehicle | 5–20 min |
| Medium | Room-and-contents, car fully involved | 15–45 min |
| Large | Whole house, commercial unit | 45–120 min |
| Major | Multi-alarm, industrial, large woodland fire | 2–12+ hours |
The zone mixes industry around Genk with farmland and nature areas. In 2024 its largest industrial fire burned construction waste at a recycling company in Zutendaal, a large warehouse fire in Bilzen raised an asbestos alert, and two big barn fires hit Bilzen and Voeren. A chemical leak at the Genk canal port needed a full gas-suit team. When nature areas dry out, the zone adds equipment and staff to woodland-fire calls, and two new forest-fire trucks entered service in 2024. Floods are a growing risk: on May 17, 2024, Voeren had the worst flood in its history, with water over 1 meter deep in more than 100 homes.

Ratings & Accreditation
Belgium has no public fire-protection rating comparable to the US ISO classification. Not applicable.
Outdoor burning: Flemish environmental rules ban burning any waste in the open air, garden waste included. The Flemish Environment Agency lists only narrow exceptions, such as fire-brigade training, farm or landscape plant waste that cannot be removed or processed on site, plant-health reasons and campfires of dry, untreated wood. Municipal rules or a drought ban can restrict even these, and campfires in nature are banned at the orange and red wildfire-risk codes. Take garden waste to a recyclagepark and ask your municipality before lighting any outdoor fire.
